If you want to grow a crunchy salad leaf, try pea shoots – an expensive ingredient to buy but easy peasy to grow at home.

With a shortage of daylight hours in November there are only a few veggies which can be grown on the ledge but thankfully pea shoots fall into this category.  A fast growing plant, it’s ideal to grow in the winter and is the BEST salad leaf to grow, packed full of vitamins A, C and folic acid. Scatter a handful of pea shoot seeds on top of multi-purpose compost in a seed tray or container, lightly sprinkle more compost to cover the seeds. Keep in the kitchen or another warm room with lots of light, don’t forget to add water and then sit back and watch them grow, in 3 weeks you will be snipping tasty pea shoots to add a crunch to your salad. Top tip: don’t discard the seedlings once you have cut your first shoots, they will grow again to give you another crop.
